SPICED OATMEAL MIX
8 c. quick oats
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 t. salt
pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg
1-1/2 c. dried apple bits or raisins (crushed cannery apples work great)
Combine all ingredients. Mix well. Store in air tight container.
Per serving: 1/2 c. boiling water + 1/2 c. mix (can microwave about 1-2 minutes) Stove top time isn't much longer, about 1-2 minutes as well. When I'm doing this for the family it is faster to use a pan.
Variations: omit cinnamon and nutmeg. Can add powdered milk if desired. For peaches and cream or strawberries and cream, try dehydrated or frozen peaches or strawberries OR jam and omit sugar. Use evaporated milk as cream substitute or whole milk works great too. For banana nut: add crushed dehydrated bananas and chopped nuts of your choice.

Hot Cereal Recipes
Cream of Wheat Cereal (also known as Germaid)
1 c. cereal
6 c. water
1 t. salt
Bring water and salt to rolling boil. SLOWLY stir in cereal while whisking constantly. Return to boil (it is usually boiling by the time I am finished pouring in cereal) and cook 1 more minute. Remove from heat. Serve. We like this with canned milk (evaporated milk) we use as a cream substitute. Great with frozen peaches, raisins, brown sugar, experiment.
